In the fall of 2018, at my college roommate annual reunion, I knit the 3 of them the classic pink women’s march hats for the mid term elections.
As we talked over the weekend and researched the “Pink Pussy Cat Hat”, we discovered that they were no longer as popular because of their one pink color that some felt lacked diversity. I started thinking….How can I design a hat that would represent diversity and inclusivity?
I tried out several combinations and finally settled on my design. My fellow knitter sister helped me with the name “The Uknity Hat.” And my small movement began. I gave them out to important women in my life as thank you gifts and the pile of hats has slowly grown on my dining room table. Nonnie, my 85 year old close family friend, recruited knitters from her Assisted Living to help.
My original plan was to knit one for each of the new women elected to Congress: Senate and House, Democrats and Republicans: 117 total! I also randomly added to the list famous woman influencers, celebrity knitters, Governors, Mayors, and some female Senators to receive one of the 150 hats, hand knit in the last 2 years. Men can certainly wear them too as my husband did at a presidential campaign event; we received a lot of attention and questions about our hats!
Our country has certainly changed over these last 2 years with the Back Lives Matter Movement, a looming presidential election, the COVID-19 pandemic and most recently the death of Ruth Bader Ginsburg. My hope is with my hats in some small way that I can inspire unity and promote a positive change in the state of our union.
The hat has 3 components:
1. The pink of the original Women’s March Hat (Pink Pussy "Cat" Hat): my inspiration.
2. Shades of brown for people of color
3. Rainbow shades for the LGBTQ+ community
The yarn came from local craft stores, mostly bought on sale. Check out the details in the attached pattern. There are a variety of the basic color schemes so they are not all exactly alike: a statement about our individuality.
I hope that others will be inspired to knit for themselves and others.

** Wash hat on cold, gentle cycle in washing machine or by hand; lay flat to dry
** Hat is roomy to prevent "hat head"; for smaller head size, fold over the edge to make a brim.
